CATAL1.5°T Initiative

The CATAL1.5°T Initiative’s ambition is to boost investments in promising early-stage climate ventures from the Global South. To ensure long-lasting impact, we also strengthen regional climate innovation ecosystems. In all of what we do, we promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). And we pay close attention to the environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts of the climate tech solutions we support.

More information about the CATAL1.5°T Initiative

Climate Impact Hypothesis

In this step, we ask you to go through a guided exercise to help you and us quantify a hypothesis of your solution’s emissions mitigation potential. For this, ask you to use this site, go through the tool step-by-step and go back to the application form with the results of this exercise. The CATAL1.5°T Initiative will use these impact hypothesis results along with the other information gathered in the application for the selection of programme participants.

After filling out the form, you can add your Impact Hypothesis to your application, send it to the CATAL1.5°T Initiative, and receive a copy by email.

Click here to download examples (and click [open] to use them).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone explain how this works?
We will host a webinar to explain how to use the Impact Hypothesis, provide examples, and answer your questions! The invitation for this webinar will be shared by the CATAL1.5°T Initiative and will take place on 13/11/2023 from 15 to 16.30 UTC. Convert UTC to your local time
What is the deadline to complete this?
The deadline for CATAL1.5°T applications, including the Impact Hypothesis, is 19/11/2023.
Can I save a file to get back to it later?
Yes you can save your Impact Hypothesis:
  1. Click 'Save' (on the top to the right)
  2. A file will download to your computer
  3. Your data is not stored online
To continue with a previously saved Impact Hypothesis:
  1. Click 'Open' (on the top to the right)
  2. Select a previously downloaded Impact Hypothesis file on your computer
  3. You can continue working
Can I add my own impact data?
Yes, for instance to add custom transport data:
  1. Select 'Transport'
  2. Select 'add custom transport' (from the bottom of the list)
  3. Change 'specify custom transport' to 'electric car per km'
  4. Provide the climate impact in kgCO₂eq for this electric car per km
  5. Provide the source you use for this data, preferably as a link
What is the source of the data used?
We use the LCA database IdeMat, in the Impact Hypothesis and Climate Impact Forecast. The data is also available as an IOs and Android app.
What if my innovation avoids or uses multiple resources?
Most impact innovations use multiple materials and can avoid the use of more than one resource. In a Climate Impact Forecast all of these can be added, but the Impact Hypothesis deliberately only allows one avoided and one used resource. Choose the most important resource that is avoided and the most important resource that is used, either by concentrating on the largest resources by volume, or by trying several resources to see which has the largest climate impact.
What is included in the climate impact factors from the database? Does it including material extraction, production, waste etc?
The carbon footprints in the database are cradle to gate, which means it includes material extraction and production, including the energy, transport and use of chemicals involved. Gate means the factory gate; the CO₂eq data does not include transport to the user, the use phase or the End of Life. To account for (avoided or generated) waste, e.g. by landfill, incineration or recycling, search the database for Waste treatment.
What is the unit CO₂eq?
Carbon footprints are expressed in the unit of tCO₂eq or kgCO₂eq, where t stands for tonne (1000 kg) and kg is kilogram. CO₂ is carbon dioxide of course, and the eq part stands for equivalent. There are multiple greenhouse gasses (e.g. Methane and CFCs) and the CO₂eq unit expresses any mix of greenhouse gasses in an amount of CO₂ with equivalent climate impact.
We made a mistake in filling out the form. What is the implication?
This is no problem, just send another version and we will use the most recent version for each company.
How many times can we fill out the form in case of a mistake?
There is no limit to filling in the Impact Hypothesis. We will use the most recent (latest) version of your Impact Hypothesis send via the tool.
Is it possible to record the assumptions that are made and the logic behind them, e.g. calculations for market size, etc. Is it possible to forecast a range?
We are looking for an estimation. When selected for the program we ask you to support your assumptions with arguments and the right sources.  It is also not possible to put in a range. If you have a range please select the midpoint of the range.
What is the email to use in sharing the completed form?
Please fill in your own (company) email address when sending the Impact Hypothesis.
